Serenader's Quadrilles No. 2 - Goin' Ober De Mountain

G.W. Bennett Manuscript - 1860

"Goin Ober De Mountain" or "Gwine Ober De Mountain" was a minstrel show song written by American blackface performer Dan Emmett. Though it may be an African-American melody, the first few bars also resemble an earlier English song "The Spinning Wheel". This was a well-known tune and it appears in banjo instruction books of the era, including "Briggs' Banjo Instructor" 1855.

In the soundfile linked below Teilhard Frost plays the tune on an mid 19th century style fretless banjo.
