Music in Parry Sound - 1882

Transcription of Personal Diary of Julia Annetje (Nettie) Ditmars (born 30 Aug 1863, died 15 Dec 1936) The diary covers the period May 7, 1882 to August 31, 1882. The portion below is of her trip on her father’s schooner, The May, in July of 1882

Parry Sound. July 31st Monday 9 pm. We have just got in here. I am glad enough to get in the land of the living again, though this does not look much like it. It is pretty dark. The moon is just rising but from what I can see it just looks like high rock on all sides of us with little lights scattered here & there in the crevices. The first sound that met my ears when we were coming in was “Home, Sweet Home” coming over the water from some of the shanties. That was followed by “Nellie Gray”, “The Mocking Bird”, “Blue Bells of Scotland” and several other airs, which made it seem more as if someone were living here. But I have got ahead of my time. This morning pa called me to get up about half past five, as we were just entering the bay then. About 6 I got up. It was just lovely, so calm and cool. We had just passed Love Island & going in & out among the small islands within which the bay is dotted just-here made me think of the St. Lawrence River. They are clear rock covered with little scrubby trees but it is a wonder to me how even these find a place to root. One island is called Flower Pot Island from two large rocks, just the shape of flower pots, which stand at one end just at the edge of the water. When the sun shines on them they look as if they were full of different colored flowers. From there we had pretty clear sailing (just a rock here & there with a light-house on it) till we got almost here. Then we got among the islands again. They are very thick here & close together. Every little way there are dummies [navigation markers] set up to point the way or vessels might easily get lost. They are not allowed to come through here at all at night.
