Twentieth Century Drawing Room

From the Grenville Hall collection. Smiley Bates (1937-1997) was an old-school country singer and multi-instrumentalist who played all over Ontario for decades. I saw him a few times in the 1970s. He was originally from Kirkland Lake. He was a good flat picker on the guitar and played bluegrass banjo and fiddle as well. Despite his nickname he was best known for singing the very "hurtin-est" of songs. He also had a bit in his show where he played a fiddle made out of a baseball bat. This tune appeared on his 1969 lp "Flattop Guitar Instrumentals".
