Here's one of many anti-Fenian songs that appear in the pages of The Grand River Sachem. (Caledonia) This one is supposedly sung by the girls of Canada to their (hopefully) patriotic beaux.
Interestingly it's set to a tune with Fenian associations. Under the title it says it's to be sung to the air "The Bonnie Blue Flag" which was a very popular Confederate song of the American Civil War. "The Bonnie Blue Flag" had in turn had been adapted from an earlier Irish song called "The Irish Jaunting Car". Later in the war The melody was reclaimed by Irish immigrants fighting for the North, and turned into "The Irish Volunteer". Once the Civil War was over it was some of these Irish volunteers who made up part of the Fenian force that attempted to invade Canada in 1866.
