This is LaRena's somewhat altered version of the song "The Man Behind The Plough", written in 1882 by American songwriter Thomas Paine Westendorf. It was published in several Canadian sheet music editions and quickly absorbed into the "folk" repertoire here. It seems to have been better-known in Canada than it ever was in The United States. I met an old man in Selkirk Ontario who sang it to the tune of "McNamara's Band"! His family had learned it from the "Family Herald" where it had been printed without a tune. Shelley Posen also collected a version in the Ottawa Valley. It appears elsewhere in this collection in other versions, under the original title. LaRena recorded it in 1979 on her lp, "Canada's Traditional Queen of Song".
