This tune from the Allen Ash Manuscript is the melody of a famous faux folksong written by John Gay, lyrics (1685-1732) and Richard Leveridge, music (1670-1758) in about 1720. Gay is best known as the author of "The Beggar's Opera" and the creator of characters like Polly Peachum and Captain MacHeath. MacHeath morphed into "Mac The Knife" in The Threepenny Opera, two centuries later.
Leveridge wrote a number of songs that are still known today, including "The Roast Beef of Old England".
The words are also provided below. They were not included in the Ash MS.
