Come Back To The Farm

Come Back To The Farm - This song appeared in the periodical "The Ontario Farmer" of January 1869. The lyrics take on the age-old theme of the offspring of farmers leaving the farm for careers and lives elsewhere. It has a nice four-part chorus. See also: "The Man Behind The Plow" elsewhere on this site.

It was composed by American songwriter Henry Clay Work. Work is best known for his hits, "Grandfather's Clock", "The Year of Jubilo" and "Marching Through Georgia". This song may partly be a reaction to the devastation to American agriculture caused by the Civil War a few years before.
