Farmer's Son and the Shantyboy (The)

Recorded by LaRena Clark in 1978 this song likely goes back about a century before that. It is part of a whole family of songs that pit one occupation against another in regards to recruitment of potential sweethearts. (Farming is usually one of them and is most often regarded as the less desirable) This song is a lot like "Ye Maidens of Ontario" except it's the young women who are having the discussion. LaRena sang it in E. I've included a PDF of the music in C as well. A Michigan version of this song can be found on Brian Miller's terrific "Northwoods Songs Blog" -http://www.evergreentrad.com/northwoods-songs/
