The G. W. Bennett Manuscript is part of the collection of the Huronia Museum in Midland. It contains a mix of dance music (British Isles and American) , and hymns arranged for instruments. It appears to have been started when Bennett was still in England in 1860. We don't know if it was added to after he came to Canada. Here is a brief biography of Mr. Bennett from Ancestry.ca
George Wilkins Bennett - By Dorothy Bennett
George Wilkins Bennett was born in Chedzoy, Somerset and became a blacksmith. The house where he was born is still standing beside the Chedzoy church. In 1874 he moved his family to Canada, living in Woodbridge, Ontario and working part time in nearby Patterson at Abel's Machine Shop. (Patterson is a ghost town now but once was the home of a sawmill, gristmill, foundry, machine shop, blacksmith shop, storage warehouse, lumber yard, office buildings and houses.) In 1876 he bought a hundred acre farm, north half of Lot 9, Conc. 9, Tiny Township, Simcoe County for 1,000 dollars from the Canada Land Company. There were two acres cleared of bush. The first house, a log one, was built over the line dividing Lot 9 in half, so a frame house was built nearer the centre of the east boundary of the farm on the Base Line Road. Mary Jemima Hook was the daughter of a tailor who had a tailor shop in Bridgewater, Sommerset. (still standing and in use) She was apprenticed to her father at the age of seventeen. In Canada, after the family were partly grown up, she did sewing for customers and also acted as midwife for the neighbourhood. Grandma Bennett died of cancer of the liver in 1925, and Grandpa from the effects of asthma in 1892 at the age of sixty. All the Bennetts and Hooks had artistic talent in one form or another. Our father, Sealey, did wood work and pencil drawings. George Bennett's father was a William Bennett, probably a blacksmith. From our Collections Database: George Wilkins Bennett b. 1831 Chedzoy, d. 1892 Tiny Township. Appears in 1881 and 1891 Tiny Township censuses with wife Mary. His son, Bertram Frank, married and his fourth child, Hilda, donated the book.
