Square Jim MacDonald (1888-1970) was born in Bayfield, but spent most of his life in Port Dover, where he was well-known as a commercial fisherman. This recording of him was made at a party in about 1961. The song is a fragment of an American "stage Irish" music hall number written by J.W. Kelly in 1891. It's is very much in the style of other "punch-up" songs from that era, like "Finnegan's Wake" and "The Night Pat Murphy Died". The first part of the tune seems like a common time version of the popular 6/8 melody used for "Hogan's Lake", "The Bigler's Cruise" and other songs.
