"The Man behind The Plow" Sung by Joseph Chisholm
A wonderful hymn to farmers. This song was written in the 1870s by American, Thomas Paine Westendorf. (who also wrote "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen") It seems to have entered the oral tradition in Canada more than it did in the U.S. Check the ONTRAD entry called "The Plowboy" by LaRena Clark. I have also met old-timers who say they used to sing it to the tune of "McNamara's Band"! This version is from Joseph Chisholm, (age 82 at the time) of St. Rafael's. It was recorded by collector George Proctor in 1960.
