OK - I know, this song is about Quebec, but the Gatineau is JUST across the Ottawa River from where Mac Beatiie lived. Mac Beattie (1916-1982) was a songwriter and bandleader from Arnprior, Ontario. His band "Mac Beattie & the Ottawa Valley Melodiers" included fiddler Reg Hill. Mac was the drummer. In his youth he was a celebrated goalie on local hockey teams.
