The "Black Velvet Waltz" is an old-time waltz that has become a standard across Canada and around the world. It was composed in the 1950s by Ross Mann, the fiddler in the CKNX Ranch Boys in Wingham Ontario. From 1955 until 1978, "Circle 8 Ranch" was a popular weekly television program broadcast each Tuesday night on Wingham, Ontario's CKNX, Channel 8. It began as a radio program called the CKNX Barn Dance on CKNX's AM sister station. The tune is supposedly named not for the fabric of an elegant ballgown, but for a popular brand of Canadian whisky that hit the market in 1951. It is played in the videoclip, by Reg Hill , the fiddler with Mac Beattie's "Ottawa Valley Melodiers".
