This is from "The Sacred Lute" an 1864 American singing school book that at some time, made its way to Waterloo County. Singing schools were held in many rural communities to teach the basics of music and choral singing. It contains mostly hymns, but also includes quite a few secular songs like this one. This one actually has a gentle political agenda as well.
