"Russia" sung by Prof. Chalaupka's Celebrated Singing School.
This is from "The Sacred Lute" an American Singing School book published in 1864. I found it in a Mennonite home in Waterloo Co. in the 1990s. This book was right from the period when hymn singing styles were changing. Read the disclaimer on the page introducing the "Old Folks Department". This is one of the "old-fashioned" hymns they included to keep the senior citizens happy! It's a wonderful spooky, minor key fugueing tune. The recorded example is from another book of the same era, but isn't exactly the same. (darned close, though)
