Sullivan Ross (1828-1904) was born in Dornoch in Sutherland, Scotland. At the age of ten he emigrated to Canada with his family who settled in the Gaelic speaking area of West Zorra Township, near Woodstock, Ontario. He first played the violin, but in 1856 he heard “Little Johnny McKenzie, an itinerant piper, and was determined to master that instrument as well. Twenty years later he was declared the North American piping champ at the Lucknow Highland Games. Throughout his life he collected and composed tunes for both fiddle and bagpipes and left several manuscripts of his music. Many of these were compiled into “The Sullivan Ross Collection of Pipe Music by Iain G. Millington in 2007. These tunes are from scans of one of his fiddle tune manuscripts that were kindly shared with me by the Ross Family of Sault Ste. Marie.
