LE SYLPHE AND PURDAY & BUTTONS COUNTRY DANCES - These are pages from a couple of cheaply printed dance instruction books with tunes. They were printed in the UK but ended up in Upper Canada. I found them at the Toronto Public Library. One was called "Le Sylphe" the other was something like "Purday & Button's Country Dances for 1808. I found reference to one of these dances being done at a party aboard a ship in York (Toronto) in 1816. Scroll past the story to see eighteen tunes with dance figures from these books.
