C.H.J. Snider (1879-1971) worked on Great Lakes sailing vessels as a young man. Later in life he wrote about those days in a long-running column in the Toronto Telegram called "Schooner Days". He also wrote many books with Great Lakes themes. Edith Fowke recorded a number of songs from him in the 1950s. There is another version of this song by LaRena Clark elsewhere on this site.
