From the singing of LaRena Clark of Pefferlaw. This song is one of the absolute classics of the "broken token" ballads. It's common throughout the British Isles, the Canadian Maritimes and Ontario. The lyrics are arranged in such a unique form that the tune always seems to be pretty much the same - I guess since nothing else will fit! It probably dates from the early 19th century.
